In this painting, #2018Triennial artist Chemu Ng’ok depicts African braiding, an intimate, intergenerational routine in which mothers, aunts, and older siblings take on the role of hairdresser. The scene Ng’ok paints is typical of a Kenyan household or a salon. Under the nimble fingers of one’s elders, cultural norms and disciplinary measures are transmitted.
