Our lives changed this weekend. I’m not the same person. There was an extraordinary grace around all of us. I was able to have time alone to have closure and to receive a new kind of peace. The grief is there but something happened that I’ll just say was outside of time and space and it brought healing and a new knowing. I’m not going to elaborate further because some things are just meant to be held as sacred, so that part is just between my heart, my Dad and the beautiful Mystery. I will, however, share that at his funeral service he had full military honors and when they played Taps it was by an actual bugler, which is becoming a rarity. He served for over 25 years in the Army and retired as a Colonel. He earned a Purple Heart and respectfully declined it out of remembrance for fallen women and men. That is just a small glimpse of his character and heart, never seeking to have accolades or recognition but always serving for the good of others. He was the gentlest of souls with an uncanny sense of humor and you’d never know the heroic feats (not just in the military) that he had accomplished because he was as genuinely humble as they come. His best friend was Amish and my Dad was as trusted and as close as one could get within their community as an outsider. And it was them and myself who buried him yesterday.

I don’t know how to transition from what transpired over the weekend back to normal life so I’ll share this photo of us when I was my son’s age. Next to it is one of his fountain pens. It’s not the best of what he had but it was one he really enjoyed using. Both were on his desk along with a brand new copy of Where The Wild Things Are, which was “our“ book.

Thank you all for being such wonderful and supportive kindred spirits. I’m okay and I know that he’s always with me. In fact now I have the best guardian angel of them all, D.A.D. ?
