We are honoring Deborah Turbeville for our daily Women's History Month post.
Turbeville, whose photographs first appeared in Vogue in the 1970s, transformed fashion photography from crisp, clean, brightly-lit imagery to dramatic scenes in which the models engage with a gritty, unsettling reality. Often shooting her photographs in crumbling buildings or abandoned streets, Turbeville famously manipulated her negatives and deliberately overexposed her pictures, infusing commercial aesthetics with raw artistic gesture.
