Y.Z. Kami’s portraits recreate the visceral experience of a face-to-face encounter.
“When you think about anyone’s face, it’s always somehow hazy,” Kami observes. “To get to that initial sensation I have to go through a long process of gradually breaking down and then building back up again.”
Working from his own photographs, Kami cloaks family members, friends, and strangers in this haze of memory. The 2015 limited edition pigment print "Tara" is an intimate close-up of his niece, a recurring subject. Click the link in our bio to view the work on Artsy.
