Dr. Pat Callis is a Professor Chemistry @montanastateuniversity. Yesterday we had the good fortune to join his family and friends for his 80th birthday celebration. For 50 years he has taught chemistry at the Bozeman campus of this land grant university. His students have gone on to further the knowledge of chemistry and several have gone on to be part of the business world. While 50 years as a teacher is pretty amazing, his dedication to family is more so. Gayle and Pat have been married for 57 years. Their two children have two children each - which equates to four little mini Pats running around. ••• At age 15 Pat started climbing and 65 years later he certainly has earned the title of “lifer”. From Alaska to Zion Pat has opened up many quality routes. One that has stood the test of time is the “Lost Arrow Direct” in Yosemite. Pat, ‘cause he is fit as a fiddle, was drafted by the late Warren Harding. When I queried Pat about the route he quickly turned the credit to Herb Swedlund, Teton guide, who initially spotted the 500 foot crack. Self effacing as always. ▪️◼️🔲 When I moved to Bozeman in 2001 Pat toured me around the classic 5.11s, shared the seasonal beta and welcomed the family Jenni and I were creating after the loss of Alex Lowe. 🔲◼️▪️ If it is a local classic climb, be it on ice or rock, there is a good chance Pat’s thumbprint is part of it. Black Magic, pictured here, was a route he climbed with Alex Lowe and Jenni in 1987. Mixed climbing wasn’t what it is today and collectively we hadn’t codified the style yet. They climbed the lower rock section in mountain boots and affixed their crampons mid route for the ice that followed. This winter we returned to have a go and Pat “hiked” the route in complete style. It’s great to have Pat as the pillar of the Gallatin County Search and Rescue team. For all of us out and about it’s comforting to know Pat is here to find us. Thanks Pat and here is to the next decade! 🐒👍🏽 @swmontanaclimbers @gallatincountysar @tomjungst for the image of Pat on the Fugitive 5.12 in 1986. Spoof cover and poster courtesy of Kristine and Tarn.
