Today marks the 142nd birthday of German artist Paula Modersohn-Becker, the star of today's #GoogleDoodle! She is believed to be the first woman to paint herself while pregnant. Her “Self-Portrait with Two Flowers in Her Raised Left Hand” is the earliest painting by a woman on view in our #MoMACollection galleries. A pioneering figure of the 20th-century German avant-garde, her career was cut short when she died in her early thirties, three weeks after giving birth to the daughter she carries in this portrait.
