The “Refugee Flag” represents the symbolic nation of 65 million people currently displaced worldwide. Christina Eliopoulos, a fellow in our department of library and archives, shares the story behind the flag’s design. Commissioned by Refugee Nation for the first refugee team to compete at the Rio Summer Olympics, artist Yara Said drew inspiration from the life jackets she and other Syrian refugees wore while making the perilous journey across the Aegean Sea.
