Surrealist painter André Masson was born on this day in 1896. “Pasiphaë” (1945) was created after Masson fled France with the help of the Emergency Rescue Committee during WWII, and settled in a Connecticut farmhouse. It is one of many of his works inspired by the coupling of Poseidon's bull with Minos' queen, Pasiphaë, in Greek mythology.
