When Dua Lipa (@デュア・リパ), was a kid in choir, her director said her voice was too low. When she was 11 with dreams of making it big, her parents moved from the U.K. to their native Kosovo, far from the scouts who could break her career. Even after she moved back to London, at 15, she struggled to find her sound. That was then. Since releasing her first single in 2015, she has emerged as one of pop music’s strongest new voices, thanks to a series of bold, stadium-ready girl-power anthems. Her self-titled debut album, released in June, has been streamed more than 1.4 billion times. Lipa, one of 10 young trailblazers who TIME has chosen as this year's Next Generation Leaders, is equally passionate about her activism. She also routinely uses Twitter to advocate for issues like gun control and women’s rights as well as to support other rising female pop stars. “Girls should be looking after girls all the time,” Lipa says. “I think now more than ever we need that in the world.” Photograph by Celeste Sloman (@celestesloman) for TIME
