The Shinmoedake volcano in southwestern Japan has erupted for the first time in about six years, spreading ash in nearby cities and towns. An ash plume rose 5,580 feet (1,700 meters) from the crater on Oct. 12, 2017, according to Japanese broadcaster TBS, which aired footage showing elementary school students wearing helmets and masks on the way to their school at the foot of the volcano. Japan's Meteorological Agency raised the volcanic alert level from 2 to 3 on a scale of 5. Level 3 warns people to not approach the volcano, the Associated Press reports. Video source: TBS/AP
