54 years ago today: Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in Washington, D.C. This 1970s church fan from Knoxville, Tennessee, depicts Dr. King, President John Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy on one side, titled "Freedom Fighters," and an advertisement for Reed’s Mortuary on the other.
Handheld fans were often used in churches across America, particularly southern Protestant congregations. The fans often included depictions of religious or famous figures and information from local businesses on the back. They were devotional objects, connections between churches and social movements such and civil rights, and an effective advertising medium.
A quote from the speech: "We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and the Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No! No, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until 'justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.'"
