Samuel Langley used this to view the 1878 and 1900 eclipse. For the 1878 eclipse, it was hauled to the top of a Colorado peak by donkeys. For the 1900 eclipse, he took it to Wadesboro, North Carolina. To thank them for their hospitality, the @スミソニアン博物館 team allowed Wadesboro residents to look through their telescopes at the stars. We hope you have a good #Eclipse2017. Remember to practice #eclipse safety! ☀️?? Images: (1) A close-up of the mechanism for moving the 1874 Alvan Clark & Sons telescope that Langley borrowed from the U.S. Naval Observatory for two eclipse expeditions. It is now in our collection. (2) Side view of the five-inch equatorial refractor. (3) Eyepiece of the telescope. ?☀️ #AmericanHistory #NChistory #Telescope #COhistory #DontForgetToLookUp #MyMyMyMyCorona
