The Warren Cup is a masterpiece of Roman art, made around AD 10. This silver drinking cup is decorated with two scenes of a man and a youth having sex. In Roman society, a man was free to choose sexual partners regardless of gender, and male same-sex relationships were not unusual. A difference in age between male lovers was part of what made such relationships acceptable – it was expected that men would be dominant both socially and sexually. You can see the cup in Room 70 – it’s part of a trail of objects around the Museum that help to give glimpses of LGBTQ histories, experiences and lives.
