Video by @bertiegregory for my new wildlife adventure YouTube series for Nat Geo. See the link in my personal bio to watch. // You can tell a lot by looking at the dorsal fin of an orca. The obvious piece of information is the sex- adult males are easily distinguished from females by their much larger dorsal fins which grow up to 6ft (1.8m) in height! But there's much more to this than size. By studying the unique markings on the dorsal fin and the area just behind (the saddle patch), it's possible to identify individuals. I was filming out on the west coast of Vancouver Island where a dedicated group of biologists and volunteers have built up a massive catalogue for the transient orca that visit the area (transient orca roam large areas and specialise in hunting marine mammals). To see these epic animals in action and to learn more about identifying them, look for episode 10 in the series playlist, link in my personal bio (@bertiegregory).
