Photo by @ronan_donovan // A mother mountain gorilla grooms her 3 month old infant in Volcanoes National Park, northern Rwanda. Of the ~800 critically endangered mountain gorillas left in central Africa, roughly 300 of them live on the slopes of the five volcanoes here in Rwanda.
Mountain gorillas were made famous to the world by the work of Dian Fossey, who lived in the forest between two of these giant volcanoes on and off for 18 years. Her legacy remains in the lives of each of these majestic great apes. Without her dedication, and that of the local park rangers, the status of gorillas today might not be what it is - a steadily increasing population across the three countries they inhabit: Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
