Marshes are some of the trickiest places to study, as the watery sediments can act like soup, soft-serve ice cream or even quicksand. But ecologists are a resourceful lot.

To stay afloat, @SmithsonianEnvironment scientists walk on wooden planks or bleachers (like the kind found in high school gymnasiums). But sometimes, the marsh wins. This photo of technician Hope Brooks demonstrates what happens when you fail to stay on the bleacher.
