Did you know of all the light that hits a forest, less than 10% may reach the ground?

Orchid ecologists from @SmithsonianEnvironment, which is taking over this account for the week, took this photo looking straight up at the forest canopy to analyze how much light would reach the forest floor.

One of the endangered orchids they’re trying to save, Isotria medeoloides, does best when roughly 11% of sunlight hits the ground. In darker forests, it can remain dormant underground for years, surviving off fungi in the soil.
