This week we’re highlighting some of the beautiful pieces of porcelain on display in the Museum. Japanese porcelain was first produced 400 years ago in the town of Arita. One of the more important kilns in Arita was run by the Kakiemon family. Established by the 1650s, it produced exquisite porcelain for export.

Over 300 years on, the Kakiemon porcelain dynasty continues, and many of the processes established in the 17th century are still in use today. Kakiemon ware was brought back to international attention through the work of Kakiemon XIV (1934–2013). This photograph shows the beautiful detail of a large bowl he made in 1996. Kakiemon XIV was the first in his family to attend art school, which is reflected in the painterly way the azalea branches and flowers swirl across the bowl.

See this beautiful piece in our free #Kakiemon display in Room 3, closing 21 August 2016.
This display is supported by The Asahi Shimbun.
