This week we’re showcasing some of the exquisite porcelain on display in the Museum. Here’s a great shot by @irisincd of a Chinese stem bowl decorated with fiery red dragons. This object was made during the Xuande period between 1426–1435, a time when porcelain production was expanding in China – in 1433 an order was placed for 443,500 pieces of porcelain! Potters incorporated all the latest technologies into this bowl – new recipes for clay meant items could be made thinner than ever before, and new glazes were developed that made white porcelain appear purer and shinier.
