This week we’re highlighting some of the great detail shots you have been taking around the Museum. We particularly like this one by @laurenlondon94. It really captures the vibrancy of the ceiling in the Front Hall staircase.
The mesmerising detail of the original ceiling was lost after World War Two when the ceiling was damaged by an air raid and subsequently painted over in neutral colours. The original pattern was restored in 2000 when the Great Court was under construction. Computer-aided design helped build up a scheme based on an accurate watercolour painting from 1846. Careful examination of the original paint work underneath the plain topcoat helped with the restoration.
