It’s #InternationalCatDay! Today we’ll be sharing some of the cutest cats in the Museum’s collection. This cast iron cat is from China, and was made in the 15th or 16th century, during the Ming dynasty. It is wearing a collar with a bell, so may have been someone’s pet – cats were kept to catch rats and mice, but were also kept as pets, as evidenced in prints, drawings and sculptures. This sculpture is also decorated with flowers and characters that represent good fortune.
