A Great White Shark emerges in the green, murky waters off Cape Cod Massachusetts. This region is a newly forming hub of white shark activity. The sharks arrive in summer to feed on seals. According to historical record, the seals here were wiped out in the late 1600s and have only rebounded in recent years due to the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. The sharks here seem to be singularly focused on seal predation and photographing them cannot be done using traditional methods such as diving in cages, as the water is murky and has very strong currents and the sharks are weary and do not approach boats. To make the first high-resolution still photos, photographer @BrianSkerry worked with researchers to design a system where remote cameras were placed inside seal decoys. After two seasons and many months or trial and error, the result was the portrait of the white shark seen here. The scratches on this shark’s face may have been caused by a seal.
