With Maule Dhan retiring, it makes sense that his assistant Asdhan Kulung (pictured here) would take over as the head honey hunter. Asdhan is 41 years old and has been harvesting honey in the Hongu Valley for 18 years. The other honey hunters joke that he is part monkey on account of his wiry build and his natural ease on the cliffs. “Rangkemi seems to favor me,” said Asdhan, referring to the forest spirit that protects both bees and monkeys. “That’s why nothing bad has happened to me.” ~
For Asdhan to take over from Maule, he must be visited and blessed by Rangkemi in a dream. But after almost two decades of work as a honey hunter, he has yet to have the dream. No one has, which is why it appears that his friend Maule Dhan will be the last Kulung honey hunter. Asdhan can work alongside his friend Maule Dhan, who is just out of frame in this shot, but he can not and will not lead a harvest on his own. ~ “Do you want to have the dream?” I asked Asdhan, as we sat together in his earthquake damaged home. ~ “Yeah, I’d like to have the dream,” he replied, “but I haven’t, and I don’t know why. Of course, I could harvest the honey [without the dream], but other people have tried and bad things have happened to them. Their fathers have died, their children have died, their houses have fallen in and their crops have failed. And I’m afraid of that.” ~
