This June 13th marks the 2nd International Albinism Awareness Day, where we educate ourselves about the condition to better support those who live with albinism - a medical condition characterised by the lack of an essential pigment called melanin, which lends color to the skin, eyes, and the hair. Albinism affects approximately one in 17,000 people and remains profoundly misunderstood resulting in multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. In extreme cases, erroneous beliefs, heavily influenced by superstition, even put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk leading many to seek protection, such as these children at living at a boarding school in Tanzania.
