Papier-mâché bonsai tree, made by a person incarcerated at the Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona during World War II. Making arts and crafts was an important way to manage the stress, depression, isolation, and anger of imprisonment.
During World War II almost 120,000 Japanese Americans were uprooted from the West Coast regions that were deemed military exclusion zones, moved cities and states away, and controlled under severe restrictions. They lived behind barbed wire.
