Last week architect James Wines of SITE visited the MoMA library to speak with Matt Shaw of @archpaper and MoMA architecture and design curator Martino Stierli about his friend, artist and architect Frederick Kiesler. "I only knew him in the last three or four years of his life, but it was a vital period," Wines said. "At a gallery opening, this little guy comes in, and everybody stopped to talk to him. Even Robert Rauschenberg came rushing over. I got to know him and began to explore his work. I moved from sculpture into architecture at Kiesler's encouragement. His most influential aspect was his multi-disciplinary persona. He was a universalist, and he got equal respect from the art and architecture worlds. He was looking at architecture and saying 'Why can't we live more organically? Why can't we slide through a house almost like liquid?' And some of these drawings are like that." The talk was part of the ongoing From the Vault series, in which architects, designers, and scholars are invited to discuss one of the 30,000 works in the museum's Architecture and Design collection.
