For #BritishScienceWeek, we’ll be sharing a glimpse into the work of our conservators and scientists who preserve and investigate the 8 million objects in the Museum!
This Renaissance turquoise goblet – currently on display in Room 2a as part of the Waddesdon Bequest – is enamelled with pairs of lovers and was perhaps made to celebrate a betrothal or marriage. It was recently examined and analysed by our team of scientists and conservators. When the goblet was assessed, the conservator found that the adhesive used to previously repair the object had weakened. This meant that the whole vessel needed to be dismantled and reconstructed. Once dismantled, the vessel consisted of 18 fragments and a number of small flakes. These were cleaned using cotton wool swabs, before the conservator reassembled the goblet fragment by fragment.
Museum scientists also chemically analysed the glass of the goblet to highlight its ingredients, using the technique of scanning electron microscopy. This research confirmed that the goblet’s production was consistent with methods used in Venice in the late 15th century.
