The Normans were Christian descendants of the Vikings (‘north men’) who had settled in northern France. Around AD 1000, groups of them left France for southern Italy. Pilgrims and mercenaries soon became conquerors and rulers. The Norman mercenary Count Roger de Hauteville (Roger I, c. 1031–1101) founded a dynasty that reigned over Sicily until the Hohenstaufen Frederick II (later Holy Roman Emperor) inherited the island through his mother in 1198. During Norman and Hohenstaufen rule, the island became a prosperous and influential Mediterranean superpower.
The animals on this inlaid ceiling panel from the Norman palace in Palermo are all associated with the royal court, where they were kept as curiosities, pets or for hunting. Some, like the eagle, were also used as dynastic symbols. The complex geometrical design creates an Islamic, eight-pointed star motif, and the whole panel reflects the mix of cultural influences in Norman Sicily.
Find out more about the fascinating history in the upcoming #SicilyExhibition, opening 21 April 2016. Book now at britishmuseum.org/exhibitions.
