This wonderful photograph was taken by @lorenzo, and features two colossal statues at the entrance to Room 7. The Neo-Assyrian King Ashurnasirpal II (r. 883–859 BC) built a magnificent palace at Nimrud (now in northern Iraq), whose entrance was flanked by two colossal winged human-headed lions. Large stone sculptures and reliefs of mythological figures were a striking feature of the palaces and temples of ancient Assyria. These figures were known to the Assyrians as lamassu and were designed to protect the palace from demonic forces. These two figures have five legs, so that when viewed from the front they stand firm, while when viewed from the side they appear to be striding forward to combat evil.
