Photograph taken by @paulnicklen while on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. A giant petrel patrols the shoreline along one of the outer islands in the West Falklands. We are just returning from a challenging but rewarding expedition where we explored this rich ecosystem from sea to sky. I will be posting a lot of images from this coverage on @paulnicklen so feel free to #followme to learn a lot more about this land and sea. The easiest way to get this photograph was to pretend that I was floating dead in the ocean. Slowly, these giant birds, with their 6 foot wingspans would inch towards me trying to assess whether I was food or not. This was all fun and games until this bird stood on my back and tried to poke a hole in my dive hood with its powerful beak. I slowly backed away and took this photograph showing black-browed albatross soaring in the background and the dense kelp forests lining the ocean floor.
