Walker’s Glossine, 1920s, “for beautifying and softening the hair,” currently on display in #ObjectProject.
Madam C.J. Walker was born on this day in 1867. The entrepreneur and self-made millionaire developed a line of hair care products for African American women, including this Glossine. The instructions on the back of the tin say: “Glossine is to be used only after the hair has been thoroughly cleaned. Use very little, not enough to make hair greasy.” Madam Walker created beauty schools to train African American women in selling the products in their own communities, promoting both good hygiene as well as pride in one’s appearance. #WomensHistory #Businesswoman
