During World War I, fashionistas were encouraged to wear black-and-white patterns, like this one. Why? The war cut off our main supplier of colorful dyes: Germany. Black dye was easy for American companies to make, but making black-and-white patterns a fad was tricky work.
This fabric, decorated with little birds and ants (yes, ants), is one of four that was made in honor of the wedding of President Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt. The wedding took place 100 years ago today.

Would you rock this look? ??????????? See the other three patterns on the blog: s.si.edu/WW1fashion (Link in profile.) #Fashion #FashionHistory @TimGunn #MakeItWork #BlackAndWhite #WorldWar1 #WorldWarI
