In the 19th century, department stores were slow to install cash registers since their cashiers, spread throughout the store, could not easily be supervised for honesty and efficiency. This particular register was produced by the National Cash Register Company around 1914, and it was used in a Marshall Field & Company department store.
The register's ornate design were part of retailers' effort to transform downtown department stores into luxurious "places of consumption." Stay tuned for more #ShoppingHistory this week.
