Each evening thousands of children, known as Night Commuters, walk from displacement camps to shelters at NGOs to avoid being captured by the LRA (Lords Resistance Army) — boys often force to be child soldiers, girls as sex slaves to soldiers. Known as IDP's or Internally Displaced People, an entire generation grew up separated each evening from their parents or siblings, a childhood lost due to war. Photographed while on my first assignment for National Geographic in early 2005 called Hope in Hell, I documented how aid agencies care for millions of people due to war, natural disasters, neglect. I traveled to Afghanistan, Indonesia, Iran and finally, Uganda, to bear witness happens when the world forget -- 20 years of conflict in northern Uganda and southern Sudan. These events has eased in recent years yet we cannot always think refugees are those who are outside of their own countries -- one can be a refugee in their own homeland. This photograph is part of my multi-week series, #BearingWitnesstheRefugeeCrisis, delving deep into my archive of more than 20 years documenting forced migration based upon war, conflict, poverty and oppression around the world. The events we are witnessing throughout Europe and beyond have haunted humanity for centuries. Today we are seeing the largest mass migration since World War II, the desperate act of tens of thousands fleeing war and oppression. My project is to put a human face on this tragedy, illustrating the reality we bear witness today -- brothers and sisters in a dire act of survival. NO, these are not terrorist. They are mothers, sons. Men, daughters. You and me, all on a journey for hope. Visit my IG page for more on the history of displacement.
