A pair of California Market Squid (Loligo opalescent) embrace in the water column at night in the waters off the Channel Islands. The male’s arms turn red during spawning as a warning to competing males to stay away. Like small, alien spacecraft, squid move through the water flashing colors and using ‘jet propulsion’ to move in all directions very quickly. Squid are like the James Dean of the sea, they live fast and die young, with most species living no more than 18 months.
