Day after day I hear and see news about climate change and its affect on polar bears. For example, the newest estimate is that roughly around half of the current polar bear population (supposedly around 30-35,000) will be gone by the middle of the century. It's extremely sad to think about these massive creatures struggling and starving as they wait for the sea ice to form and for it to extend far enough to give them more hunting range. The funny thing is when I spent time in the Arctic, the polar bears I saw didn't seem to get the message that they were in trouble. For example, one day while north of Svalbard, we counted 14 bears among the sea ice and roughly about 18 seal carcasses. Everyone was thrilled to see their success, but scenes like this one of a polar bear jumping across ice floes is still troubling to see. Every year the ice takes longer and longer to form and dissipates roughly about one month ahead of schedule.
