To celebrate #DaysOfTheDead, the Great Court of the Museum was transformed by Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero. Dedicated to the migrants worldwide, her hanging installation and conceptual altar capture the poignancy of the Days of the Dead in Mexico. Her works use colours traditionally associated with this festival: pink, purple, orange and white. These symbolise celebration, mourning, the life-giving properties of the sun and purity.
Banners and tyres decorated with barbed wire made reference to the many Mexicans who die crossing the USA/Mexico border. The fragile tissue paper balloons and articulated skeletons are abstract representations of the perception of the dead by the living. The balloons may also conjure the apprehension of those left at home when loved ones leave on their perilous journey. Romero not only explores the contemporary politics of migration, but also its heritage as a vehicle of cultural contact and exchange. Movement of peoples, images, objects and ideas is at the core of the Day of the Dead festival, which contains elements of both pre-Hispanic and European religious practice. On a broader level, this contemporary Day of the Dead installation illustrates the complexity and hybridity of identities, which are rooted in the present.
