Today in 1851: Isaac Merritt Singer is issued a patent for his commercial sewing machine.
The eighth child of poor German immigrants, Isaac Singer was born in 1811, in Pittstown, New York. As a young man he worked as a mechanic and cabinetmaker. For a time he was an actor and formed his own theatrical troupe. He later worked in a wood type manufacturing plant in Ohio, where he invented a better type-carving machine. In June 1850, he went to Boston to seek support for that machine. While there, he became intrigued with sewing machines others were designing. This was his attempt to improve on their designs. Invention is iterative!
Singer was granted Patent No. 8,294. #innovation #DIY
