According to the original design, this flag, commissioned by General William T. Sherman after the Civil War, should have 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies. But we only have 12.
Our conservators and curators believe that the 13th star was removed from the flag before it was given to the @スミソニアン博物館. There is an almost perfect square-shaped loss in the top row of stars where, based on the spacing in the drawing, we would expect to see a star. The straight lines in the silk indicate that the star was cut out of the flag, most likely removed as a souvenir—a common practice at the time.
We don't have current plans to display Sherman's flag, still delicate and sensitive to light after its thorough conservation treatment. But we'll let you know right away if we get the opportunity to display it!
