The hibachi grill is one of many Asian cooking tools adopted by American cookout fans. After World War II, many newly affluent Americans traveled in the tropics, developing a taste for casual living and distinctive local foods and drink. Back home, they re-created these experiences in new new suburban backyards. On patios, they swilled tropical drinks and grilled the cooked meats craved by a postwar meat-mad America.
First imported from Japan and Hawaii, and later Taiwan, this small charcoal-fueled hibachi was perfect for preparing skewered meats and veggies, perhaps made popular in tropical-themed tiki bars, where customers often grilled their own food at the table.
