Tonight artist Rashid Johnson sat down for a conversation with @mcachicago curator Naomi Beckwith as part of an ongoing series for the MoMA exhibition "The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World." Seated in front of his work, "Cosmic Slop 'Black Orpheus,'" Johnson talked about using materials like shea butter and black soap as signifiers because he sees them "as a way to coat yourself in an identity." After Johnson pours the melted soap, it begins to harden quickly, in as little as five minutes. "As much as you can get done in that period of time, you do," Johnson says. "We all have our own line. This is about how I author my line, how I naturally move my hand, the length of my arm." #TheForeverNow
