The Kinematics dress by @nervous.system (2014) was recently added to MoMA's collection and is currently on display in the design galleries on the third floor of the Museum. Made of nylon, it is quite a feat of 4D printing. To produce it, the model's body was imaged into a 3D scan, onto which the dress surface was then digitally tessellated into triangular shapes that hinge together (the smaller the triangles, the more flexible and likely to drape the fabric will be). The tessellation was then compressed to fit the volume of the 3D printer, and printed in its folded status. This method allows garments to be customized based on clients’ individual body shapes and aesthetic desires. and pieces much larger than the printer can be made because they use articulated rather than fused joints. - Paola (@paolantonelli), Senior Curator of Architecture & Design at MoMA. #insideMoMA #design @nervous_jessica #4dprinting #3dprinting
