Interesting/melancholy object from our maritime collection: this is a cedar net float made around 1955 in Astoria, Oregon.
Later, it was decorated to commemorate the fishery's significance in the area. A typical Columbia River gillnet required about 500 of these floats and the Columbia Net Floats Mill produced millions.
The mill closed in 1959, when fishermen began using plastic floats.
