Today in 1942: President Franklin D. Roosevelt issues Presidential Proclamation No. 2537, beginning full-scale internment of Japanese Americans.
Paul Ishimoto made this for his sweetheart May at the Jerome internment camp in Arkansas. May's mother passed away soon after arriving at the camp, leaving May as the oldest of 11 siblings. When Paul first asked May to marry him, she said no, perhaps thinking of her responsibilities to her siblings. Paul took the rejection hard.
When May saw him a few weeks later, he admitted, "I can't live without you. You have to marry me." This time, May said yes. They were married in April 1944, getting leave from the camp to buy a wedding outfit and rings. After the war, May became a costume designer and Paul got a job in the federal government. They raised four children and were loving parents. #asianpacificamericanheritage #WorldWarII
