Ever wonder what life on land would be like without lungs? Ask the Sierra Nevada ensatina salamander. A California native, this subspecies belongs to the family Plethodontidae, which consists of lungless salamanders. Due to the absence of lungs, this beauty conducts respiration through its skin and the tissues lining its mouth. While this is an incredibly cool process, it comes at a price – the salamander must maintain adequate levels of hydration, meaning it can only live in damp environments and movement on land is restricted to times where humidity is high, and temperatures are moderate.
