It brings to mind the landscapes depicted in Auguste-François Bonheur’s paintings. ⁠ ⁠ Unique to Bonheur’s paintings are the handwritten labels affixed to the corners of his sketches, which identify the regions of the French countryside where they were made. If you look closely, you’ll also see tiny holes in their corners, which suggest that he pinned his sheets of paper to a board while sketching outside.⁠ ⁠ The two works, shown here, are currently on view on the fifth floor in Monet to Morisot: The Real and Imagined in European Art. ⁠ ⁠ 🖼️Auguste-François Bonheur (Bordeaux, France, 1824–1884, Meudon, France).
