Not to mention this season’s clever introduction of real historical figures, like Emily Warren Roebling, whose portrait (shown here) is part of our permanent collection. This painting depicts Emily’s likeness in an elaborate dress, similar to how many eminent Americans presented at the time.
Roebling’s husband, Washington Augustus Roebling, was the chief engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge. When he fell ill during construction, Emily assumed all on-site responsibilities and was the first to cross the bridge, in 1883. She was honored at the bridge’s opening ceremony, and was celebrated in Brooklyn and beyond.
So, yeah… you could say we’re hooked!
