Self-representation. Agency. Black and African pride.
Each of these themes are on display in the section mid-way through #AfricaFashionBkM, titled “Capturing Change.” It serves as a glimpse into the late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century photographs that were part of a shift of representation of Brown and Black communities.
The title of Malick Sibibé’s photograph, shown here, translates to “very good friends in the same outfit.” A celebrated Malian photographer, Sidibé became known for his black and white photographs depicting scenes of celebration, young people’s sense of style, as well as lively portraits.
See the photography from this period that captures the richness and diversity of the continent in Africa Fashion through October 22.
