Found in sand deserts from Turkmenistan to parts of Russia is the piebald shrew. A pocket-sized species that reaches no more than three inches in length, these tiny shrews feed on insects and their larvae, ants, and occasionally, small lizards. They are most active at dusk and throughout the night, retreating into rodent burrows when the sun rises for some much needed rest. Photo taken @moscow_zoo_official.
