It will grow back, but it will be different. I still balk at the word woman, but abruptly I no longer feel like a girl. Should I have felt that sooner? Probably. A 44-year-old girl. How embarrassing. For me, I think the most surprising part of not having children is the fear of arrested development. The feeling that, until we parent, we remain in some ways children ourselves. I saw a bunch of colourful balloons the other day, and I craved a child’s birthday party. But for who? For myself? (Yes.) Like I said, embarrassing. What was questionably cute in my 30s is now firmly not. There’s little about me that’s cute anymore. I feel the power in this even as I grieve. “Woman.” I try it on. I cut my hair off.
